HEIWASHIN DOJO

DOJO RULES AND PROCEDURES

  1. Upon entering or leaving the dojo, students whether in dogi or street clothes will bow toward the interior of the dojo and then to the presiding instructor. The instructor will acknowledge the bow if he is not occupied, otherwise the student need not wait for the instructors acknowledgement.
     

  2. Should a student be unavoidably late for class, the student will enter the dojo quietly and wait until the instructor gives a sign of recognition. The student will then approach the instructor and obtain permission to join the class.
     

  3. Should it be necessary for a student to leave the dojo while class in still in session, the student will first receive permission from the presiding instructor.
     

  4. Students must always speak respectfully to the instructor and the designated senior student (Sempai). Instructors will be addressed as “Sir” or “Sensei”. All students are expected to be courteous and understanding. Advanced students are expected to set a good example for new students and to assist them whenever possible.
     

  5. Students will bow to their training partner before and after they have finished working together. Students will turn around and adjust their gi if needed prior to bowing. Proper respect will be shown to more advanced students.
     

  6. All unnecessary noise or rowdy behavior and loud conversation have no place in the dojo, both during and before/after class.
     

  7. Students seated on the side of the mat will keep a posture fitting with the spirit of the martial arts. Students will be seated in either the crossed legs or seiza position. Silence will be observed and attention paid to the activity at hand.
     

  8. Your dogi should be kept clean at all times. Complete dogi will be worn while practicing in the dojo and the dogi, except for trousers will not be worn outside the dojo except to approved events. Remember, your dogi is for practicing the art of Ju-Jutsu, and are not play clothes.
     

  9. Students will ensure that they are personally clean and their toenails and fingernails are closely trimmed. Jewelry of any type will not be worn during class. This is to protect both you and your training partner.
     

  10. You must have the approval of the instructor before participating in any tournament competition, demonstration or other activities by another dojo other than your own.
     

  11. Students may not teach or give a demonstration of Ju-Jutsu without the instructor’s prior approval.
     

  12. Any substitute instructor will be treated with the same respect and courtesy as your own instructor.
     

  13. Students will remove shoes upon entering the dojo and shoes are never permitted on the mat.
     

  14. Students with long hair shall arrange their hair as to not interfere with training.
     

  15. Students will not engage in any activity or behavior which will bring discredit to the dojo or your instructor.
     

  16. Students will not use alcohol or any substance that will impair their judgment or coordination before class. If a student appears to be impaired or alcohol can be smelled on the breath, the student will be dismissed from class.
     

  17. Students who are in 12th grade or below must maintain passing grades in all subjects. Students who fail to maintain passing grades will not be allowed to test for advancement or may be suspended from class until such time as they can demonstrate their grades are now passing.
     

  18. Students will follow the principles listed below:
     

    1. Show loyalty to my God, my country, to my instructor, dojo, fellow students and the principles of my art.
    1. To always strive for what is good and not what is evil.
    1. Never misuse the art of Ju-Jutsu or initiate violence. When forced to use my training in a self-defense situation, to only use as much force as necessary to stop the attack.
    1. To work toward the creation of harmony between all people, always remembering that Ju-Jutsu is for defense only.
    1. To respect the authority of person’s in a position of authority.
    1. To show courtesy to all persons, even when they are not courteous to me.
    1. To respect nature.
